Hobart is a riverside city with a busy harbour, its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the compact suburbs below. Capital of the state of Tasmania on the Derwent River. Mount Wellington (1270m) rises just west of Hobart, and the city is spread out on its lower slopes.
Hobart is the largest port of Tasmania. The University of Tasmania (1890) is located in Hobart. The city was founded as a penal colony in 1804 and named Hobart Town after the British statesman Lord Robert Hobart. Hobart has a thriving arts-and-crafts scene and a real sense of history.
